I’ve broken the exact process down into four steps, and I’ve also crafted a template you can use for when you’re doing your outreach.

Step 1: Identify your potential targets

As I’ve mentioned, you want to be targeting products and services that you’re more than happy to vouch for.

Your own reputation is on the line if you’re seen to be in cahoots with businesses that provide shoddy offerings, so keep that in mind whilst you’re doing your planning.

Brainstorm a big list of potential targets, then check to make sure they meet the additional criteria:

  • Is the business relevant to your own niche?
  • Is the business already displaying testimonials on their site?
  • Do the testimonials include a backlink?

Ticking these boxes ensure that your link is relevant and that you’re not wasting any unnecessary time.

Your prospect list is going to look wildly different depending on what niche you operate in, but let’s suppose for example that you’re in the internet marketing space.

Your list could include theme creators, hosting providers, social media scheduling software, email marketing software, graphic design tools, SEO agencies, website developers, and so on.

Once you get your thinking cap on, you’re likely to have a sizeable pool of possibilities.

Step 2: Establish who you need to contact

You want to make sure that you’re reaching out to the right person, so your pitch email (which we’ll come to in a minute) is more likely to be read and actioned.

Here, the answer is largely going to depend on the kind of business that we’re looking at.

If it’s a one-man band or micro business that you’ve worked with in the past, you probably already know who to contact.

Larger organisations might even have a dedicated page on their site for submitting testimonials.

If you’re unsure, reach out via social media or through the contact page. Ideally, you want to get a hold of a name so you can make your email a little more personal.

Step 3: Pitch the idea of a testimonial

We’re all about saving time here where we can, so we aren’t going to just fire over a testimonial before we know they’re keen and they give us the go-ahead.

Keep it short and simple, and cut out any waffle.

This template here can be used to create your own effective pitch by just filling in the blanks:

Hi [name],

I’m [your name] and I own [your website/business].

I’ve been using [their product/service] recently to help me with [a problem you had], and I’m really impressed with the results it’s helped me to achieve!

Would you like me to put together a testimonial about [the product/service]? I’d love to help you to spread the word further, and I’d be delighted to provide you with a testimonial for you to use on your website.

Thanks, and I’ll look forward to hearing from you!

[your name]

Step 4: Write an awesome testimonial

There’s a good and a bad way to write a testimonial.

If you’re submitting something like ‘this service is great! I recommend it to all my friends!’ then there’s a strong chance they’re never publishing it.

Remember that the purpose of a testimonial is to persuade a potential buyer that this thing is worth their money.

A really great way to do this is to identify a potential objection that a prospect would have (and one that you also had before you bought), and bust it.

So for example, maybe you bought a WordPress theme but you were worried that you didn’t have the technical know-how to install it.

Your testimonial could be “I bought xyz when I was brand new to blogging, and I really worried that I wouldn’t be able to work out how to use all the amazing features. I was super impressed to discover that the set-up was amazingly simple, and I could do it myself in just 5 minutes.”

(Bonus points if you can also reference an additional element, such as great support, or if you’re happy to include a video testimonial).

So that is pretty much that for the testimonial link building method.

It’s often much faster than writing a guest post, and the link juice potential is often much higher.

Of course, a really good linking building strategy will involve a variety of methods, and it’s highly likely that to achieve the very best rankings, you’ll need to use this in conjunction with additional tactics. But this one’s a great tool to have in your kit when you’re planning your approach.

Let us begin with the most used question in our industry…

There’s no definite answer to this question, sorry! We wish there was!

Some websites can increase their search engine rankings with just a few backlinks. However, this practice can potentially hurt the site’s ability to draw adequate traffic because you’d be ranking with low volume search terms.

Very generally speaking, a small business can rank on the first page of search engines for around 5 terms of average competition with around 50 backlinks

That said, it doesn’t mean stuffing your site with numerous backlinks; you need to add them carefully to avoid attracting penalties.

Play The Long Game…

Consistency is key with building links, and it’s advisable not to set a target number of backlinks or a deadline to achieve them by.

How Many Backlinks Do I Need To Rank My Website?

Link building should be an ongoing process, something you work on every single month to ensure a consistent level of high-quality backlinks are being added.

But, you need to cover the basics first:

A well-optimised site needs fewer backlinks than a poorly optimised one.

Poorly optimised sites tend to dilute and reduce the relevance of a high-quality backlink.

As such, the first step is to ensure your website is well-optimised for ranking before adding backlinks.

Here are a few ways to optimise your site, and you can check this article for more:

  • Eliminate unnecessary outbound links
  • Add internal links to the most important pages
  • Ensure the most important pages as easily accessible, e.g., one or two clicks away
  • Eliminate broken links
  • Merge or remove pages that do not have useful content
How Many Backlinks Do I Need To Rank My Website?

Eye Up Your Competition

Count the number of backlinks your competitors have got for specific keywords.

Only count your rival’s pages displayed in Google’s first 10 search result pages; not the total number of backlinks the rival site has.

Pages with lots of backlinks, and those with the least number of links shouldn’t be included.

Divide the total by 8 to get a rough estimate of the number of backlinks your competitors are using.

This calculation doesn’t account for quality, but this is an estimated amount of backlinks that you should be aiming to add to rank your pages in similar positions to your competitors.

Focus on the quality of the link; not quantity.

It’s understood that one high-quality backlink is often worth hundreds of low-quality backlinks.

The links shouldn’t be few; the key is in finding the perfect balance between the number of backlinks you want to use and their quality.

To ascertain whether you’re adding a high-quality backlink, you should be aiming to tick off AT LEAST HALF of these factors with each link you add:

  1. Is the link from a trusted source? Check spam score and trust flow metrics with sites like Moz and Ahrefs.
  2. Does the site attract significant traffic? Check traffic levels with sites like SEMrush.
  3. Is the link from a relevant site? Is the site within a similar niche or industry?It is not been acquired easily.
  4. Was the link hard to acquire? Build relationships and avoid free links on spam sites.
  5. Is the link not a reciprocal link? Reciprocal links violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, so use sparingly.
  6. Is the link naturally witin the content? Make sure your link location makes sense and benefits the reader.
  7. Is the link on a page with page rank? There is a lot of value placed on links on pages that are already ranking.
  8. Is brand anchor text being used? The occasional link with your brand name is good.
  9. Are Exact keyword match anchors used? Link anchor text that exactly matches your target keyword occasionally.
  10. Are there other authority links? It’s good to be on a page with other high authority site links.
  11. Is it a different site to your other links? It’s good to earn backlinks from different sites.
  12. Is the link on a site with da50+? The higher the Domain Authority, the higher the backline value.

1. The URL doesn’t make sense or isn’t relevant to the niche

Sometimes though, if they’re completely nonsensical or appear to have no relevancy to the nature of the content, it could be an indicator that the site is built on a repurposed domain that was previously used for something completely different.

The main issue here is that at first glance, you’ve got no idea what the domain was previously used for. It could have been part of a bad neighbourhood, stuffed with spammy content, or engaged in black-hat SEO tactics which could ultimately cause you problems in the future.

2. There’s huge discrepancies in metrics from different tools

Different metrics tools use different algorithms to assess sites, so there are always going to be some discrepancies from one to another.

It’s when the data is wildly different though that it could be a sign that there’s been some manipulation at play, and there are deeper issues going on beneath the surface.

This is one of the reasons why we use API data from across various providers to cross-reference our quality checks.

3. The site is crammed full of Adsense/PPC ads

Running ads is a totally legitimate and acceptable monetisation strategy, but if you find that there’s more ads than content, or they completely dominate the site at the cost of user experience, exercise caution.

4. The images are all obvious stock photos

This one is largely dependent on the niche. In some subject areas, such as business or marketing, stock photos are the accepted norm.

In some more creative niches though, the best bloggers will take their own photography, and indeed this can be one of the sites’ best selling points when it comes to collaborating with brands.

A successful partnership with such a site could result not just in a link placement, but in some high-quality marketing collateral that you can go on to use for brand awareness across your own platforms.

Take a common-sense approach with this one, but as a side note, do think outside of the box when it comes to what you can achieve from your link building campaigns. When done creatively, you can achieve way more than just link juice.

5. There are no associated social media profiles

The best sites, with high-quality content and a loyal readership, will almost always have a social media presence.

If your prospective site appears to have zero presence, it could be a sign that it was created purely for making a fast buck from selling links, and that it’s not a site that’s going to be loved and nurtured in the longer term.

6. There’s no real information on the contact page

A good contact page will usually include an email address, and sometimes even a phone number too.

If you can only find a contact form and no associated text, it could be a sign that the site isn’t as high quality as you might initially assume.

7. Every single post appears to be sponsored content

Again, this could be an indicator that a site exists purely for selling content placements.

A quality site will have a varied selection of posts, including those created by the author purely for the enjoyment of their reader.

8. The site covers an extremely wide range of niches and topics

There are plenty of highly covetable sites out there that dive into a variety of different subjects and do it really well.

A women’s lifestyle site, for example, might conceivably cover topics such as fashion, beauty, career, personal finance, travel, and more.

Similarly, many bloggers will start our writing in a specific niche, then once they’ve gained traction and success, they’ll be eager to start covering additional subjects that interest them. That’s completely normal and to be expected.

But when a site’s content is so vastly varied that it doesn’t make a great deal of sense for any reader who might land on it, this should be a red flag.

If the site you have your eye on has recently covered what to wear on a first date, how to groom a chihuahua, loan options for getting a new car, and a roundup of the best casinos to visit in London, then it’s probably worth asking yourself a few questions.

You get the picture. As is the case with most things, a bit of common sense goes a long way.

This is an old-school link building tactic and is considered to be hugely spammy these days.

Ultimately, things like this will ruin the user experience, and that’s a pretty good rule of thumb to apply when you’re looking for problematic sites.

10. There are mentions of it being a ‘directory’ or accepting ‘article submissions’

Again, this is an old-school link building tactic that may have served you well a decade ago but should be avoided today.

A site that states they accept this kind of content is quite likely to not be particularly discerning with the work they publish, so you may want to avoid being associated.

Think of it like this… If something seems a little too good to be true, it probably is!

11. There’s no privacy policy page

The vast majority of websites require a privacy policy page, and there are very few exceptions to this.

Not only can it serve to give readers confidence in terms of how their data is handled and stored, but it can also ensure that you’re fulfilling various legal obligations.

If you can’t find this page on a site, it’s another sign that it should probably be avoided.

12. Your gut feeling tells you that this isn’t a quality, legitimate site

Is this a site that you’d return to simply for pleasure?

Does it appear to be well-loved and nurtured?

Do you get the impression that the owner takes pride in their work, and seeks to make it the best it can possibly be?

The more involved you get in link building and the longer you regularly visit sites with this in mind, the better your senses for this kind of thing will become.

The gut feeling might be a little harder to quantify than some of the other quality checks, but it’s definitely something that shouldn’t be overlooked!

Talk about why they are mentioned in your list.

Make sure it is still relevant to your niche, if you’re featuring the top beauty influencers but you’re an insurance company why would they want to link back to you?

Again, make sure you let them know they’re included in the list, if they don’t know they’re in your listicle how do they know to share it.

With searches for keywords related to the story peaking in Google and sites like Twitter when the story is first broken, your content should be able to grab everyone’s attention while they’re searching for the details.

How do you find news to Newsjack in the first place?

Google Trends is a great tool to monitor current trends and stories.

Following Journalists in your industry will give you first access to the most relevant news for you.

Also, keep an eye on trending topics on Twitter. Sometimes though it is just down to luck and being in the right place at the right time.

Once you’ve found your news, get it out there!

Write and publish your piece as soon as you can.

Promote it on Twitter using the hashtags that everyone is using to cover the story.

You can even contact journalists who you think might be interested in your story, so they can talk about and share it.

6. Become An Expert In Your Field With Guest Blogging
